African Cooking
Published in Hardcover by Little Brown & Company (March, 1971)
Author: Laurens Van Der Post
Average review score:

Classic Cookbook of African Recipes
Laurens Van der Post, a South African of European ancestry, lived and traveled in most of Africa and wrote a variety of fiction and non-fiction, much of it concerning Africa. "Recipes: African Cooking (Foods of the World)" contains primarily recipes from Western, Eastern, and Southern Africa, with a great deal of anecdote and observation, which Van der Post writes very well. The book documents not only African gastronomy, but also the optimism of newly independent Africa of the 1960's. Chapters include: "My Continent: A Personal View"; "The Ancient World of Ethiopia"; "New Cuisines for New Nations" [West Africa]; "In the Highlands of East Africa"; "The World of Portuguese Africa" [Angola, Mozambique]; "East and West Meet at the Cape" [South Africa--Asian influenced]; "Great Cooking from Rich Farms" & "On the Track of the Voortrekkers" [South Africa--European influenced]. Nicely illustrated in the Time-Life coffee-table book style. (Important! This publication consists of two parts: a large hardcover book containing most of the text but only a few recipes in each chapter, and a small spiral-bound book containing all of the 120 recipes.)

Questioning the "improvements" in the new edition
This is by far our favorite children's book of colors. The rhymes and illustrations are great. However, we bought the first edition in 1993 and we think it was even better. Why would the editors take out Lavender and Turquoise, Black, White and Gray? I'm glad they made a new edition, though, we waited 3 years to buy it after our 1993 edition wore out.

Basic Concepts in Embryology: A Student's Survival Guide
This book is extremely helpful as a supplement to textbook readings. It definitely meets the objective of placing the primary concepts UP FRONT! Using this book, I was better able to focus my study, prepare for exams, and drastically improve my grade. I feel this book works best as a supplement, due to very recent advances in embryological study that are not included in this book.

Building and Evaluating Family Support Initiatives: A National Study of Programs for Persons With Developmental Disabilities
Published in Paperback by Paul H Brookes Pub Co (August, 1993)
Authors: Carl J. Dunst, Carol M. Trivette, and A. Lauren Starnes
Average review score:

I found this book to be very informative and concise.
As a local family support council member, I was interested in what was happening across the nation in regards to family support. Items such as states that had passed legislation with or without funding attached, copies of surveys used to gather information regarding family support status provided some good insight. Thanks for writing this book.

Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation: Basic Theory and Application (Contemporary Perspectives in Rehabilitation)
Published in Hardcover by F A Davis Co (January, 1998)
Authors: Frances J. Brannon, Margaret Wiley Foley, Julie Ann Starr, Lauren M. Saul, and Julia Ann Starr
Average review score:

Not bad
I obtained a copy of this book as a required text during my physical therapy education. It did a pretty good job of simplistically explaining the role of the heart and lungs in health and what happens (technically) when problems arise. This was a good reference book for hardcore scientific facts and it is specifically targeted at the rehabilitation disciplines. If that is what you are looking for, this book will be the one you need.
